ANZAC DAY

The day on which in 1915 the Aust & NZ forces landed at Gallipoli in
the Dardenelles (25th April) subsequently became a public holiday
throughout Aust. The day was first celebrated in 1916, but no public
holiday was declared. In later years memorial services were held
mainly on the Sunday following the actual date. The Returned
Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's League pressed for 25th April to be
observed as a Public Holiday, but some opposition came from business
interests. However, the actual date has been observed as a public
holiday each year since 1919 in WA; since 1920 in NSW (with the
exception of 1921) Queensland and Tasmania; and since 1921 in Victoria
and SA. It was made a statutory holiday in Qld and SA in 1921, in NSW
in 1924, in Vic in 1925 and in Tas in 1927. Following WW11 it was
decided that Anzac Day should become a day of remembrance for all
those who gave their lives in both World Wars. In all States dawn
services are held at cenotaphs and war memorials, and later in the
morning there is a parade of past and present members of the three
services. From the start, all hotels and other places where
intoxicating liquors are sold have been subject to some control on
Anzac Day. In some States they are closed by law throughout the day.
The question whether the day should be observed like the Sabbath or be
celebrated in part (during the afternoon) by recreational gatherings
has been the subject of many discussions and much difference of
opinions.
